Prevention
According to The Global Consortium for Depression Prevention, prevention of depression is significant as depression, in the present, is very common worldwide which affects a great number of patients, and it is one of the most affecting disorders in term of disease burden. Depression is also the factor that is thought to be involved with many other diseases and economic problems. Moreover, since the treatment of depression now can only deal with a limited extent of symptom, prevention is better than cure.
Although there is no definite method to be followed as a depression prevention guide, controlling stress is advised to lift up your resilience and improve inferior self-esteem. Likewise, an early treatment since the beginning of the symptom can help stop depression from worsening while long-term treatment may help hinder from the reoccurrence (Mayo clinic staff 2012).
Below are some helpful suggestions for preventing depression:
1. Exercise regularly. Any type of exercise of physical activity will relieve you from stress by producing a chemical from your brain called Endorphin which will help you relax both body and mind as well as promote good sleep.
2. Healthy diet. As “Health is wealth”, good nutrition is another vital component which should not be overlooked to help prevent depression. Overeating, starving, and eating irregularly should be avoided as they are influential factors that harm your health. Drinking enough water and eating salubrious diet like vegetable and fruits are supporters to nourish your body properly.
3. Talk to friends, family or seek social interaction. Talking about your problems and expressing them will release stress. Also, they tame overall mind and body function to be normal. Don’t be shy to tell what your problem is as the any reaction from your audience is earthly, it is nature of the world. Moreover, keep speaking out and sharing your problem will help you be sound-minded.
4. Keep yourself occupied. It is another critical component to prevent you from thinking too much which will lead to depression. The condition is that what you are occupied by must always be as positive, creative, and productive as possible.
5. Admit and accept the condition if you are encountering depression. Recognize and understand it rather than pretend that it is really happening to you.
Now you know some simple and important ways, then you can prevent depression before it really sets in. Keep in mind that depression prevention is totally better than trying to overcome it after it has already emerged.
